BoxSpeed vs self storage

Self storage from Big Yellow, Safestore, Shurgard and hundreds of independents gives you a unit and a padlock. Typical prices are £60 to £95 a month for a 50 sq ft unit in the regions and £49 to £54 a week for 35 sq ft in London, before the van hire, the lifting and the visits. Big Yellow refunds up to £50 of van hire; nobody carries for you.

BoxSpeed does the collecting, carrying, storing and returning. For twelve boxes you pay £93.40 a month, £39 to collect and £39 to return, and you never see a unit. The trade-off is access: you cannot pop in, you book a return on your day instead.

Choose self storage if

  • You have a whole house to store, you need to visit often, or you have a van and a free Saturday.

Choose BoxSpeed if

  • You have a few boxes to a small room's worth and would rather never lift them, or you need them returned to a different city.
